Life is rollercoaster of dreams, aspirations, and challenges. It is NEVER straightforwad, at least not my life.
When things get tough, it’s easy to feel lost or give up on what you once wanted. But there’s a key to staying focused: your “big why.” Without that internal spark, even the most exciting dreams can seem out of reach.
For the longest time, I kept hearing aobut that inner drive, confidence, the moment we know you just have to keep going, but how to find it?
What’s Your “Big Why”?
Your “big why” is the heartbeat of your dreams. It’s what pushes you forward, even when things get messy. Think about it—are you chasing goals because you truly want them or because others expect you to do it?
Knowing what really motivates you builds resilience when life throws curveballs. And you better be ready, because life WILL throw curveballs, that is the only thing you can be absolutely certain about.
Take a moment to reflect and ask yourself:
Why do I want this?
How will it change my life?
What values drive me?
Journaling is a great tool that can help bring clarity to why you are pursuing your dreams. Too many times goals get truncated because they are not really ours, we are easily influenced by the goals and priorities of others and we make it them our own.
We want what others have or what others want, because that is the right thing to want. Sounds familiar? Did you ever join the gym because your best friend did or started a diet, boguth a certain car because every one of your friends did?
Shifting to Internal Motivation
Sometimes, we’re driven by what others think—peer pressure, expectations, or even fear of failure. Shifting to internal motivation, where your goals align with your true values, brings more meaning to the journey. It’s no longer about just achieving the goal, but about what it represents in your life.
It becomes about being align with who you are, or who you want to be.
Challenges are opportunities to grow.
Obstacles can feel like walls, but with a strong “why,” they become stepping stones. Each setback teaches something valuable. Take a look at your past challenges—what did they teach you? How did they shape who you are today?
Look past the obvious, think what who you would be if a particular curveball had never been thrown at you?
For me, I'm thinking about tearing my ACL while doing Taekowndo a few months ago. I certainly did not planned this. But this set back is allowing me to see how strong of a community I have, people that love me and are here to support me.
While I would have rather be healthy, I don't know that I would have realized how many people I have around me, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
Keeping the Momentum
Success isn’t a straight line—it’s a twisty, unpredictable path. To stay on course, try:
Positive Self-Talk: Keep encouraging yourself.
Small Wins: Celebrate little victories along the way (every single one of them).
Support System: Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
Adaptability: Be open to change when plans don’t go as expected.
Visualize Your Success
Spend time each day visualizing what success looks and feels like. This not only fuels your motivation but also helps you focus, especially when things get tough.
Visualizing is more like imagining, it doesn't have to be visual. There is a big focus on visualization, but we all perceived the world in different ways. Visualize with your 5 senses, which one gives you the most pleasure, the one that will show you who you will be and how you will fee when you finally reach your goal.
Embrace Your Drive
Your “big why” is the key to unlocking your unstoppable drive. When your motivation comes from within, challenges become part of the adventure. Stay resilient, stay focused, and let your passion propel you forward.
Take a deep breath, reconnect with your “why,” and let your inner strength guide you. When things get though, take a break .... and then continue!
